Si bien en la actualidad, debido a la gran concentración de iluminación artificial, especialmente en las grandes urbes,denominada contaminación lumínica, hace el ver las estrellas del cielo nocturno, iconos del Universo Nocturno, algo difícil o sencillamente imposible. Pero existen alternativas, y no necesariamente necesitas esperar un apagón o ir a lugares lejanos y remotos para poder verlas. Basta con encontrar sitios un poco alejados de la luz artificial, y aunque te sorprenda los puedes encontrar fácilmente a las afueras de una ciudad, quizá en un punto alto, donde además podrás observar tanto el cielo nocturno, como el fulgor de la ciudad a lo lejos , o incluso por ejemplo basta con ir por una calle, donde la iluminación este apagada y si las condiciones de oscuridad son buenas y claro si la luna en ese momento no esta presente en toda su gloria y majestad, se mostrará ante ti una escena sin comparación. Pero si lo que buscas es una experiencia única, excelente e inigualable puedes visitar las denominadas Reservas internacionales de cielo oscuro.
También existen los Parques internacionales de cielo oscuro, como Northumberland en Reino Unido o parques que son lugares designados como cielo oscuro y protegidos por lo mismo, BigBend en Texas o Headlands en Iowa, ambos en Estados Unidos.
